A megachurch is defined as a church with 2,000 or more in average weekly attendance. According to Wikipedia, the Hartford Institute lists more than 1,300 megachurches in the United States, with fifty of those having more than 10,000 members. In many evangelical Protestant circles, having a megachurch, or at least a large church, is seen as a sign of success and achievement. To this end, some even water down their message or add programs and amenities designed to increase "production value," making themselves more "seeker-friendly."
However, while many congregations are so concerned with large numbers, Jesus offered a much smaller number as a qualification for a church: "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them" (v. 20). It's the presence of God and not necessarily the presence of a multitude, which creates a church.
