Once there were two men...

Once there were two men named Dan and Ed. They had been friends for as long as they could remember. They belonged to the same church, attended the same schools, enlisted in the same regiment and fought in the same World War. When Dan and Ed were officially discharged, they decided to purchase neighboring fruit farms. Their first years of farming were filled with disappointment. In order to help make expenses, Dan and Ed decided to find jobs in the city.
As the years went by, Dan and Ed, enabled by their wives who managed the farms, continued to work in the city during the day and on the farm at night. The years passed. It was now financially possible for Dan and Ed to quit their city jobs and stay home on the farm. However, the moment never seemed to be right. There was always a new piece of equipment to be bought, or an addition to the barn to be built. Both men found it hard to leave the financial stability the jobs offered in order to work only on their farms.
Then Ed had a heart attack. The doctor issued a warning. "Either you quit your job and stay home on the farm, or you sell the farm and continue working." Ed's wife begged him to quit his job. "What good will have come from working so hard, if you die before you have a chance to enjoy the farm?" she asked. Dan's wife worried that Dan would be the next one to have a heart attack. She pleaded with Dan saying, "You can learn from Ed's heart attack. Please quit before you have a heart attack too."
Then the women waited for Dan and Ed to reply.
