On one episode of the popular television program Cheers, Norm and Cliff decided to have a contest to see which of them could provoke an argument between two of the other patrons of the bar. Through sowing seeds of false information, they generated conflict, then sat back to watch it grow. It was an amusing pastime to set the others up for small confrontations or disagreements, until they carried their game a little too far.
The disastrous outcome was serious hurt and a broken relationship. Then Norm and Cliff discovered that though they had become quite skilled at provoking arguments, they had no abilities at all to help them provoke love and healing, and they had a heavy price to pay. How much harder it is to restore a relationship than to break it. How much more worthwhile it is to provoke love than to provoke anger.
