One inch below the sleeve...
Illustration
One inch below the sleeve of the T-shirt was a finely detailed tattoo of Cupid, a full quiver of arrows, and an ornamental heart with the name "Mary" centered within it. It was a fair assumption that the pretty girl walking with the tattoo-wearer was the Mary in question.
Joe vividly remembered the night he received the tattoo. He was in the army at the time. He had just received a letter from Mary bringing him up to date on the hometown news. Just two weeks earlier, she had responded with an eager "Yes" to his proposal of marriage. So, much of the news had to do with their friends' reaction and the beginnings of wedding plans which Mary was handling. As with all her letters, he read and reread this one several times. He missed her so much, he felt that perhaps the rereading of her letters would somehow bring her closer.
After a time of intense longing for Mary, Joe came upon an idea which would present to the world a visible sign of commitment to Mary and at the same time give him a special remembrance of her. He decided to have her name tattooed on his arm with something romantic incorporated into the design.
Joe was not too particular about the finer elements of the tattoo's design. However, the importance of the tattoo centered on the message it flashed to the world ... "I am hers and she is mine. We are committed to loving each other forever."
