The Only Help
It is not the many spoken words
but the silent "I've been there too"
that lifts us from the pit.
It is the widow's soft embrace
of one who has just lost
as she once lost
that speaks most closely
"You are understood."
It is the steadying touch
one who looked far down
addiction's crippling road
then turned again to life
that gives the addict hope.
So it is, then, only a body
tested, tempted, and torn
that finally can stretch forth
and redeem, restore, renew our own.
