Over the years I have received a variety of invitations, including for weddings, birthday parties, and even jobs. They have included written or verbal requests. Usually they have been an appeal to be present at a certain time and place for a celebration.
Matthew records a parable of Jesus about a wedding banquet. Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a king who sent his servants to those who had been invited to his son's wedding. But the invitation was rejected and the people refused to come. Shocked, the father sent other servants to invite the people to come to the wedding, but they were ignored. Others were not as nice to ignore the conversation as they actually killed the servants.
The response was outrage from the king. He sent his army to destroy the murderers and destroy the city by fire.
A new invitation was sent out and this time it wasn't only to a select group of people but to everyone who would choose to accept. The truth is that even then few understood the implication of the invitation. The incredible joy that is offered is beyond imagination. Declining the invitation has unthinkable consequences. Making sure we say "yes" is eternally vital.
