We humans are always hedging our bets. Listen to the conversation in the casino or at the track and you will feel an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear. Christians often have the same problem. We're not sure our man will win. In polite company we express many opinions, but few convictions. We're forever saying yes and no, which means little more than maybe.
But our man has already won! This is the good news! Paul and his companions preached it despite the ridicule and pain. Martin Luther preached it to a frowning church: "Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; were not the right man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing."
And we confirm it every time we end our prayers and hymns. In Christ, God has said yes to us in spite of our doubts. And we say Amen in spite of our maybes. Lord, we believe; help our unbelief! "Let the Amen sound from his people again: Gladly for aye we adore him. Amen!"
