A husband and wife were traveling with their six children by van from Michigan to California. Just outside of St. Louis, they stopped for gas. One of the children, a four-year-old boy, went to the restroom. When he came out the van was gone. The next stop for the rest of the family was in Oklahoma City, 500 miles away. That's when the boy was missed. "I didn't believe it at first," said the father. "I figured he was under some blankets, so I went back there and started looking around." "We came up one short," said the mother. "I couldn't move, I was so scared." A phone call to the police assured the parents that their missing son was safe in St. Louis and they turned around to retrieve him. "We always do a head check," said the mother after the reunion. But she said they failed to check at St. Louis because "it was the last stop of the night and all the kids were going to sleep."
God says he is "like a father to Israel," which represents all the people of God. He doesn't overlook or forget his children. If weneed rescuing, it is because we have strayed from him. But he gathers us together, whoever we are and whatever our needs may be. He provides for us, just as he did for his believing Old Testament people, and he takes us to where he wants us to go. That is a real father's love to trust and confide in.
