In the painting by Max Gabriel titled, The Last Token, a young maiden has been thrown into the lions' den because of her Christian faith. The lions, enraged by hunger and captivity, creep toward her helpless body, but she appears oblivious to it all, for at her feet is a white rose that has been thrown to her by her lover. For that moment, at least, there is no hungry beast, no bloody sand, no screaming mob -- there is only a white rose and a throbbing heart. It is an immortal painting of love triumphant. So James tells the Christian flock that they can endure any suffering, knowing that Christ will never leave them. -- Dickson
