Pastor Ken Kettlewell writes that throughout his youth, he was afflicted with sore throats and tonsillitis. Finally, when he was through college and into seminary, a physician counseled him to have his tonsils removed.
That was done. Kettlewell says, "I remember vividly waking up with a terribly sore throat. I could hardly swallow. The doctor recommended chewing aspergum, and my mother handed me a pill. I said through clenched jaws: 'You start it and get it going and then give it to me.' She said: 'Foolish one! You need the aspirin coating. You need to do your own chewing.' "
Kettlewell continues, "So I experienced having tonsils removed as a young adult, and I made two vows that night. First, I would never do this again. Second, I would send my children off to have their tonsils removed at the age of 6. (I didn't fulfill that vow. All three of our children still have their tonsils.) But I did learn a truth. You can hear about something. You can read about something. You can even see pictures of something. But you don't know anything until you actually experience it."
