Paul's words on love in...

Paul's words on "love" in 1 Corinthians are among the most famous ever written. There are many definitions, interpretations, and manifestations of "love." But Christian love is a different kind of love. It is more than romantic love or the love we feel for our friends and neighbors. Christian love is an "agape" love in which our wills are conformed to the mind of Christ. The famed evangelist of the nineteenth century, Dwight L. Moody, commented on this passage, "God hates the great things in which love is not the motive power; but he delights in the little things that are prompted by a feeling of love." Love is essential to us as we serve Christ. Perhaps in this season of Lent we can give up apathy as we joyfully embrace the love of Jesus Christ. At the foot of the Cross of Calvary and the mouth of the Easter tomb of Love's dawn, we are given the courageous grace needed to be lovers of God and our neighbor. In every wedding ceremony in which I have officiated, I have never failed to include this hymn of love in the service. How often I have later learned that the bright young couple at the altar let their love for one another wither and disappear. Love is not easy to maintain in our materialistic culture, but it is something Christians should work at in personal relationships and in service to God, who is Love. -- Mills
