Prisms are interesting little instruments...
Illustration
Prisms are interesting little instruments. When a beam of white light is shined on a prism, the light is split into a band of colors called a spectrum. Science tells us that the beam of white light contains all the wavelengths of visible light. When that white light passes through the prism, the different wavelengths are split, showing the various colors. We see no sign of those colors until the light passes through the prism. Jesus Christ in this passage from John is called the true light. We might say that his life is like the prism that shows us the great array of God's love. In him we see God's mercy to the sinner. We see God's call to the wayward to repent. We see God's compassion for the outcast. We see God's concern for the sick. We see God's comfort for the sorrowful. In Jesus Christ we have seen God in a different way, a clearer way, a way that we had not fully seen before. As verse 14 states, we have beheld his glory as of the only Son from the Father.
