A recent development in the war against crime is life-sized cardboard cutouts of police officers. More and more stores and individuals are purchasing these life-size figures as a deterrent to would-be criminals. At first, when they originated in England, people laughed at the idea that a piece of cardboard would deter crime. But studies at many retail stores have found that shoplifting has decreased by about 25 percent in stores where these cardboard cops are on duty. The manufacturer explains that the figures are just like scarecrows. People see the image and they think of a real police officer. Jesus tells us that it is by love that we make his image visible to others. -- Bowen
