Reconciliation can be a difficult and painful process, even in the best of circumstances. It is the role of a mediator to facilitate this process at times, especially when the estrangement is severe. However, there is one essential factor to be considered in the mediation process --the relative power of the parties involved in the mediation. If one party has greater power on authority, as employer, parent or teacher would have, then that person must first relinquish his/her authority, so that the resolution process can be negotiated between parties of "equal" on balanced influence and power.
