In Rembrandt's painting of the parable, both brothers are cast in those deep baroque shadows. It is the figure of the Father that Rembrandt painted in gold, shimmering with compassion. As it is the figure of the Father finally which shimmers through the parable, the Father who frees his children to be who they are to become, even when it means to go their own way, or when it means to stay suffocatingly close to home. It is the figure of the Father who longs for those children to come to their senses, who waits for us, wants for us, grants us unconditional acceptance, who needs each of us for the party to be complete. It is the figure of God. -- Steffey Morrow
