In the service for the Burial of the Dead in the Lutheran Book of Worship, the pastor invites the congregation to confess their faith in the words of the Apostles' Creed with these words: "God has made us his people through our Baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith." At a time of death, these words about "living together in trust and hope" and confessing our faith in the God of life seem particularly strong. It calls us back to the same faith as Abraham, who, although he could not see the fulfillment of all the things God was doing through and in him, still moved ahead in the strong faith which was itself a gift from God. We too are called to live in our confession of the God of life, which means living in "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
