Several years ago, Herman and Mary Jane were vacationing in South Carolina as they
had since Herman retired. Mary Jane fell ill and was rushed to the nearby hospital. For
several days, she lingered between life and death. The medical staff assured Herman that
they were doing all they could for his wife. They were hundreds of miles from home,
from their children, and from their church friends. Herman found people who were so
kind to him. The owner of the motel where they were staying allowed him to stay an
extra week while his wife was in the hospital. Later, a stranger allowed him to stay at
their home.
People from the church began calling him, people he did not know all that well, asking if there was anything they could do to help. Others called to tell him that they were praying for his wife. Fortunately, Mary Jane recovered, thanks to God and the dedicated medical staff.
Now, years later, Herman says that what struck him the most during those terrible days was how people were so kind and how so many people reached out to him, some were complete strangers. During that time, he realized that he was not alone, the Lord Jesus was there with him.
The author of the book of Hebrews describes Jesus as the great high priest, "Consequently he is able for all time to save those who approach God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them."
