For some reason, fishing takes on wild proportions, and a fish story automatically implies
that it is a story with much fiction and exaggeration. So it seems is the case with the
fishing in Luke 5:1-11. If you have never had a Galilean service where you speak from a
boat as people gather on the beach, try it, you'll like it. Peter must have been impressed,
he gives Jesus permission to speak from his boat to the crowds that gathered, then,
although they had been fishing all night, they try again at the word and direction of Jesus.
Their catch is unbelievably large. Was it a miracle, or had Jesus seen some schools of fish
as he stood there talking? Whatever happened, when Jesus invited them, they left
everything to follow him. They truly became fishers of men. As the song used with the
Isaiah passage suggests, "I'll go with him, all the way."
