In the summer of 2002, Pope John Paul II came to Canada for World Youth Day. The city and the country were abuzz as preparations were made for the papal visit. He arrived in Toronto a frail man, yet he walked unaided down the steps from the papal plane. He greeted thousands of people, as they came before him. Despite being afflicted with Parkinson's disease, Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass for 800,000 people on the final Sunday.
Born Karol Joseph Wojtyla in Wado-wice, Poland, on May 18, 1920, he was elected to lead the Roman Catholic Church at the age of 58, the youngest pope of the century. He is the first non-Italian pope in 456 years. He is arguably the most recognized man in the world today. At World Youth Day, people broke uncontrollably into tears after speaking to him. He is indeed a great man.
Pope John Paul II is a priest after the order of Peter. Another priest, after the order of Melchizedek, came to his own, and his own received him not.
