The telephone rang in the pastor's study. It had been that way all morning. Every time he began to get in the flow of preparing for the Sunday sermon, there was some interruption.
"Hello," the pastor answered, hoping the conversation could be dispatched as quickly as possible, allowing him to resume his preoccupation.
"Who's speaking?" asked an almost apologetic voice on the other end of the line.
"This is the pastor of the church."
"Oh, I was hoping I would get somebody like you. I just wanted to talk to someone for a minute."
"Oh no," thought the pastor, "I surely don't have time for this."
"You see, I live alone and am confined to a wheel chair. My children live in another state and sometimes I get so lonely I just can't stand it. I'm not able to get to church and wouldn't feel like sitting there if I came. Could you just talk to me for a little while?"
It was a legitimate call. The pastor, mentally chastising himself, not only spoke with the invalid lady, but acquired her address and immediately made a personal visit.
Not everyone who cries, "Come over and help us," lives on a distant shore. There are Macedonians much closer to home.
