This text speaks of the Church and its obligation to a life marked by love, forgiveness, and "Christ-likeness." For the Church these dispositions become a means of marking the Church's authenticity to the world.
My son has a baseball his maternal grandfather gave to him. It has been signed by Joe DiMaggio, "Joltin' Joe," a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Accompanying the ball in its case is a certificate of authenticity. The certificate reads: "It is hereby certified that the item of sports memorabilia which accompanies this document has been personally autographed by Joe DiMaggio ... The autograph was signed under the direct supervision of, and in witness thereto, The Scoreboard, Inc. The autograph is unconditionally guaranteed as to its authenticity."
Without this certificate it would not matter a great deal whether or not Joe DiMaggio had, in fact, signed the ball. No one could prove he signed the ball. It would consequently be of marginal worth. However, with the certificate stating witnesses observed the act of signing, its worth is assured. The Church without signs in its life of Christ's presence (like love and forgiveness) finds its authenticity questioned and its ministry diminished.
