The theory of thirds says that in any organization, including the church, one-third of the people will do two-thirds of the work and giving and that the next third will do the remaining third of the working and giving. One-third of the people will do nothing.
"While the theory has some truth in it," said John Peterson, a church councilman, "I don't believe that we have to settle for it." John led the council in the decision to hire a coordinator of lay ministries who worked very hard to get more people involved in ministry in the church and community. The pastor started having people "join our ministry" instead of just "joining our membership." The bulletin each Sunday read, "The Ministers are all the people of God in Christ here at this church."
John was given an opportunity to preach one Sunday when the pastor was on vacation. He began his sermon, "Fellow ministers in Christ ..." His text was Luke 10:2, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few."
