There are parallels with Elijah's getting into trouble with the government, for example, Ahab, and then passing through wind, earthquake, fire, and then having God speak to him in the stillness, and the early church's trouble with the government, for example, Rome, and the Pentecost experience which emboldened them. Elijah felt that he was the only one left, when there were 7,000 left (verse 18).
Elijah's experience reminds us that we can have a great religious experience such as his victory over the Baal prophets and then become despondent. Had we been Christians in the year 1500, we probably would be despondent. There had been reform movements in the 13th and 14th centuries but these showed no vitality. Christianity seemed like an ancient faith with little hope for the future. Yet shortly before and after 1500 came new and unpredictable movements which brought the greatest expansion it or any religion had experienced. Christianity, which suffered from criticism of the church and clergy -- sound familiar? Within a hundred years was to have new vitality. No one could have expected it. How many of us truly expected the Berlin Wall to come down in our lifetime?
