There is an incredible power in receiving aid from unexpected quarter. Over 25 years ago, while in college, I gave a friend a ride to a bus station to pick up his girlfriend who was visiting for the weekend. It was winter and the bus station was located in a bad neighborhood. For some reason the bus' arrival was delayed until well after midnight. During the time we waited, I inadvertently left the car's lights burning, so that later we were unable to start it. We found ourselves stranded in a parking lot in a dangerous locale at 2 a.m., and we became worried.
To our relief a police car arrived shortly thereafter. The officer pulled up next to us and asked if we'd had a problem. We stated that we needed jumper cables and asked if he had any. He said that he did, but that he was not going to leave his car in the neighborhood at such an hour. He suggested that we find somewhere else to wait. Needless to say, we were both shocked and livid.
Before long, another car appeared in the parking lot. It was a pink cadillac with a white fur interior and gangster whitewalls (no joke!). The driver was a caricature of one who made his living managing ladies of the night. We grew very nervous, until this man drove up, asked our problem, very graciously assisted us in starting our car with his own jumper cables and suggested we depart the neighborhood in short order. I never hear the parable of the good Samaritan without recollecting the experience.
