There is some wisdom that can be gained in living and meditation, and some that can be gained from books and schools. But there is also a quality of wisdom which can only come as a gift divinely bestowed, that goes beyond common sense and prudence. Solomon here has prayed for this gift, and has found all good things that come with it. By human effort, we can gain some wisdom, but great wisdom can only come as a gift. By human effort, great accomplishments in countless fields are possible, but we always seem to discover limits to the possibilities we can dream of. The Dutch for hundreds of years have specialized in the horticulture of tulips and other bulb species. Magnificent blooms in countless colors and forms give pleasure to millions of gardeners. But there is no such thing as absolute control. On occasion, a tulip variety will "break" -- instead of blooming as the hybrid that was developed, it develops a new color or mixture of colors. -- Johnson-Hoy
