There was a time in...

There was a time in the Battle of Britain when things looked dark indeed for the British people. London was being bombed daily. The courage of the citizenry seemed to be wearing thin. Rumors abounded that Hitler was on the verge of invading. Just as the situation seemed most desperate, Churchill called a meeting of his most trusted advisers. He laid out for them the stark facts: their nation stood alone, and resources were running out. The room fell silent before the prime minister’s gloomy appraisal. Some government ministers appeared to be on the verge of giving up. Then Churchill said quietly to the hushed gathering, “Gentlemen, I find it rather inspiring.” What is it that gives people like Churchill the courage, the perseverance, the sheer chutzpah, to look disaster in the eye and stare it down? What is it, for that matter, that gives Paul the ability to triumph over his “thorn in the flesh”? Only faith. Nothing but faith.
