Three verses of this Old Testament Lesson are also used on Epiphany 2 "C" (62:1-3) and on August 15th, a Feast of St. Mary (61:10-11). Both rejoice at God's mighty act of salvation and celebrate the coming of the Messiah, like Mary rejoicing in her Savior-God, with a soul magnified by God. The imagery of new life, with new festive garments, and springtime is a continuation of the renewal theme.
The Christmas theme of rejoicing in the incarnational new life with a new Adam, a new covenant, a new message of love, and a new beginning are the subject of the celebration theme.
Thou shalt know Him when He comes not by any din of drums ...
nor the vantage of His airs ...
nor by anything He wears ...
neither by His crown ...
For His Presence known shall be
By the Holy Harmony
That His coming makes in thee ...
Unknown, 15th century
