Tonight we find ourselves on the road to Bethlehem. Some travel the road under duress, like Joseph and Many. Their travel was required by a rogue government.
Some people today walk the Bethlehem road out of a sense of obligation. After all, it's Christmas. They feel as if they should go to church.
Some travel the Bethlehem road out of a sense of responsibility. They celebrate Nativity because they sense the call of God on their lives. Or they want to set a good example for their children.
Some walk the Bethlehem road out of sheer delight. The shepherds were like that. These shepherds, these religious outcasts, see the shining glory of the Lord's presence and hear the voice of an angel, who announces great joy for all people. When the announcement is made, the whole sky is suddenly filled with the music of heavenly choirs, praising God and promising peace among those with whom God is pleased.
Excitedly, the shepherds decide to travel the Bethlehem road to see the child the angel had spoken of. Those who celebrate Christmas best are the ones who travel as the shepherds. They come to worship because they want to be here. For them it is a delight to be in the presence of Jesus.
