Unfortunately, the church has not always been noted for acting like the church. Sometimes it has acted more like Ebeneezer Scrooge. When folks in crises have approached the church for help, I have often been questioned by church officials like this: "Do they belong to our church?" "What is his or her denomination?" "What race are they?" "Why didn't some other church help them? Why did they seek us out?" If the officials didn't like my answers to their questions, the folks in crises received no help. That scene has been repeated more times than I would care to mention. Ancient Israel didn't have a corner on the "hardened-heart" and the "shut-hand" attitude. In every age the people of God need to hear the question Jesus asked in Luke 6:32, "If you love only the people who love you, why should you receive a blessing?" (Good News Bible) It's the loving, compassionate heart and the wide-open hand that receive God's blessing.
