Verse 5a of this passage...

Verse 5a of this passage is one of several references to adoption in the Christian
scriptures (see also Romans 8:15, 23; 9:4; and Galatians 4:5). In the New Testament,
adoption never is treated as a second-class state. Instead, being adopted is presented as a
great privilege, for the Christian becomes a member of the family of God through
adoption. In Knowing God, theologian J. I. Packer states, "Adoption is the
highest privilege that the gospel offers." Even today, adoptees sometimes hear remarks
that denigrate their status -- an attitude some have labeled "biological chauvinism." The
adoptee can rejoice that adoption is an important motif in Paul's theology and that this
method of creating new families has been chosen by God.
