"We have the assurance that God will raise us from death," said the fourth brother to the soldiers who tortured him. These Jewish martyrs shared the same hope that sustained early Christians. Aristides was a Greek who wrote a letter in A.D. 125. Aristides wrote to a friend about the new religion we now call Christianity. He tried to explain the reasons for the growing influence of the new faith. He wrote: "If any righteous man among the Christians passes from this world, they rejoice and offer thanks to God, and they escort his body with songs and thanksgiving as if he were setting out from one place to another." They winked at death because they saw it as a journey.
