When the gospel writers included the detail of a voice from heaven in the story of Jesus' baptism, they are telling us exactly where to look to find God. Clearly the voice was for the benefit of the citizens of Jerusalem, many religiously sophisticated of whom had come to the Jordan to listen to John the Baptist.
Even in the most innocent-sounding casual conversation, humanity continues to illustrate its inability to find God where he is to be found -- in the Christ.
The television personality Jack Paar (forerunner of Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show) once got a sort of scolding from Fred Allen, a guest on the program, after the host inadvertently illustrated his own unwillingness -- or ability -- to identify God properly. Paar, fawning over Allen upon his first-ever meeting with him, stammered, "You are my ... God!" Replied Allen dryly, "There are 5,000 churches in New York and you have to be an atheist!"
