When a leader of Polish Solidarity and his family were thrown out of Poland and came to America, they depended heavily on a son named Padwel. The boy spoke the language and was able to open bank accounts, buy groceries, fill out insurance forms, and write checks. Without him the family would have found it difficult, if not impossible, to survive in this country.
Padwel also became sick, but he refused to see a doctor because of the cost and inconvenience to others. When he died of cancer, everyone was shocked, so well had he hidden his pain and despair.
Padwell (Paul) was described as special by all who knew him. "He was beautiful in every way," they said. His story has a poignant quality about it that is rarely matched, because he literally gave his life for others.
While an only son like Padwel can sacrifice his personal desires to give his parents a few months of life in a new land, only one life is worth enough to give all the lives that have ever lived or will live an eternity of perfect life. That life is the life of the Son of God. Jesus Christ "gave his live as a ransom for all," says this reading from Timothy. Human sacrifices, even in their most touching examples, are severely limited. Jesus' life was a sufficient ransom for all.
