When you fill a container...
Illustration
When you fill a container with water you expect to empty its contents in time. The water flows into you, or the person you share the water with. I sat next to a guest speaker in a community church service who whispered to me that she needed a glass of water before she spoke. I had a cup of water beside me to quench my own thirst, but I gave it to her to help quench the dryness in her nervous mouth. It became for me a symbol of emptying what I had for the benefit of another.
We want God to fill us with the Holy Spirit, and to keep on filling us, but we must remember that the time will come, as it did for Stephen, when we will have to be completely poured out as far as this world is concerned. Like Jesus dying on the cross, Stephen yielded up his spirit, emptying himself of all that God had filled him with to the glory and praise of the Lord Jesus Christ.
