The woman had heard many frightening stories about truckers on the highway and she feared them. Driving one day to a distant city, her car "threw a rod" and she was stranded on the road, far from the nearest town. The dark was approaching, when a giant 18-wheeler pulled up behind her. First, the trucker called the police and then a tow truck, but she was still on the highway, without transportation.
"Do you want a ride?"
His question reminded her that he was "the enemy," the Samaritan.
"How can I, a Jew, take your gift?" she thought, using the metaphors of the story. Then she remembered another Samaritan, whom she called "good." With hesitation she accepted and met the kindest, shyest man she had ever known. Her stereotype was shattered, for "if you knew the gift of God...." This was indeed God's gift, like living water gushing up!
