The word "Epiphany" comes from a Greek word which means "to show, to reveal, to make manifest." Jesus is the light of the world and the revealer. He sheds a light on things that have long been hidden in the darkness. He even discloses the purposes and desires of the heart. Often those things he reveals to us bring pain. As human beings we would desire to be spared the pain of disclosure, but following pain comes relief, healing and the peace only God affords.
A prayer attributed to an African school girl puts it directly and speaks the message of Epiphany: "O Thou, Great Chief, light a candle within my heart, that I may see what is therein and sweep the rubbish from thy dwelling place!" Amen and Amen.
