Years ago, while I was a seminary student in Pittsburgh, I had the opportunity of a summer's experience in a small church in St. Charles, Iowa. I knew no one there, of course. I had never seen the town. The session made arrangements that I would stay in the home of a retired mailman and his wife. They lived right across the street from the church, and they continued to be active there even into their older years. How good they were to me, providing me a home and welcoming me into their family!
The summer was quickly over, and I returned to school for my final year of preparation for the ministry. But I continued to think of Charles and Beulah, and I often prayed for them. I hoped that sometime I could visit them.
That time came, after I was married. My wife and our two children were on our way to Minnesota. I said, "Let's go through St. Charles." We did just that and had a wonderful time with memories of that summer when I lived there.
Thus we move on, from experience to experience. But, like Paul, we pray for friends and "long to see them again."
