As a young boy in the 1930s, Bill was abused by a priest. He knew that if he told his mother, she wouldn't believe him and he would have been punished for saying such a thing about a holy man. He kept it all to himself and, in the process, developed an intense hatred for both God and the church. Worse, he told no one for over forty years.
Finally, after all those years, he confided in his wife and told her the whole story. The road to recovery started there, and is not yet complete. But slowly, with counseling and with patience, the process of forgiveness is under way. His relationship with God is coming around more quickly than his relationship with the church. Bill has, in fact, quoted scripture and said, "How can I say, 'Father, forgive (him) for (he did) not know what (he was) doing,' when he knew exactly what he was doing?" Bill is a work in progress and God's love and grace are evident in his life.
