Zechariah prophesied the Messiah would come like a victorious king, but riding humbly on a donkey. In ancient times a king who was waging war rode a horse, but during times of peace he rode a donkey. For this reason, the donkey came to be the animal which symbolized peace.
When Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Passion Sunday, he fulfilled this prophecy by riding on a donkey. He was victorious, but he was also humble. When the people wanted to make him a king, he left the city to be with his disciples. His entry into Jerusalem symbolized both the humility of his death on Good Friday and also the victory of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Jesus came not to wage war on behalf of the kingdoms of this world. He came to bring the peace of a new kingdom of God, a peace that passes understanding. Therefore, he came triumphant and victorious, but also humbly riding a donkey, the animal of peace.
