Who's The Greatest?
Children's sermon
Object:
A first place trophy
The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Good morning boys and girls. Does anyone here remember someone saying, “I am the greatest?” I remember hearing it many times by a prize fighter named Ali. Does anyone here remember Muhammed Ali? He used to say a lot of things and he was a very good boxer. He told everyone that he saw that he was “the greatest of all time.” Wow! Not many people say those kind of things about themselves.
We like to see people win. We like all of the cheers and we like it when people tell us how good we are. But we wait until someone else says it and we don’t say it ourselves. I have this trophy that I won a couple of years ago. The other players on my team gave it to me and told me that I was the best that day. I felt very good.
Jesus taught us to be humble. He talked about men in the church that went around telling people how good they were. They were always asking someone else to do the work but they never lifted a hand.
The same thing was true when they prayed. They told God how good they were and how happy God must be with them. Jesus said that is not such a good idea. He said that God doesn’t like to hear people brag about themselves but rather God likes it when we are encouraging other people to try harder and helping them to be better.
Jesus had some good advice. Be quiet about yourself and do what is right and God will notice you and be happy with you. Amen.
