The Song in Search of a Voice
SERMONS FOR THE FIRST THIRD OF THE PENTECOST SEASON
Since the second great war of our century humankind has treated itself to seventy more armed conflicts. The result: there are ninety million fewer of us around. The price tag came at four trillion dollars, too. At our worst we are war-making creatures. We have rarely experienced a generation of peace at any time during our long habitation upon this planet. All of us want peace. Then, when a few of us finally assume power, we cannot resist piaying with the military hardware at our fingertips. We try to convince others that "shootum up" conflict is the only way to achieve domestic tranquility.
