Sermons For Sundays After Pentecost (Middle Third)
Once again our Lord tells us, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven." "Bread of life" -- that metaphor sums up all that Jesus said and did. "Whoever eats of this bread will live forever," Jesus says. That "eating" metaphor about the "bread" metaphor describes our grasp of faith by which we appropriate for ourselves all that God-in-Christ has said and done for us. Now Jesus tells us more: "The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." That is what he said. And all that he has done for us began when "the Word became flesh and lived among us" (John 1:14).
