It was a new church for Sam. It was his grandmother's church, and because Sam loved his grandmother, he sat on the edge of the pew and tried hard to listen. "Are you saved?" the preacher asked from the pulpit far away. Sam remembered when he had saved pennies for a new plant for Mother on Mother's Day. "Maybe Mother saved pennies for me," Sam thought. The preacher continued, "Will you give your heart to Jesus?" Sam wondered where his heart was. But if Jesus needed Sam's heart he would be glad to give it. Sam whispered, "Grandma, do I have a ..." "Shhh, Sam, you are in church." "Take Jesus as your Savior ..." the minister continued. Sam wondered where he was to take Jesus. Sam had a lot of questions to ask his grandmother. "Will you come forward ..." Sam was sitting at the front of the church. He turned around, waiting for the others to come. "... to make a profession ..." "What's a prof...?" "Shhh, Sam!" Grandmother sighed! "... and commit your life ..." Sam knew better than to ask his grandmother what "commit" meant, "... to be baptized, forgiven, redeemed...?" Sam smiled. He knew what baptize meant, but the other words were new words. Sam leaned back against the pew and looked out of the windows. It was warm and Sam was becoming sleepy. Maybe someday he would understand what the minister was saying, but for now he pretended he was outside listening to the birds and counting the clouds in the heavens that were telling the glory of God.
Talk together: The psalmist said that the heavens tell us of the glory of God. How do you know and experience "the glory of God"?
Prayer: Dear Lord, we thank you for heaven and earth, for they are yours and everything in them. Amen.
