Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Long ago Isaiah said it,
prophesied a messenger
who would come before Messiah
acting as his harbinger.
Last of prophets, first of martyrs,
John fulfilled his given role,
calling men to their repentance
so that God could make them whole.
John prepared all those who’d hear him
as Isaiah had forseen.
He baptized them in the Jordan
to denote that they were clean.
and he warned that the Messiah
soon would make his presence known.
And, fulfilling God’s intention,
he would come to claim his own.
John said, 'Now’s the time appointed.
Waiting time is almost done.
Make yourselves a fitting people
to receive the Holy One.'
John still calls us to repentance
so that God can set us free
from a life without a purpose,
from our ways of apathy.
In the deserts of our lives, we
still need help. We still are lost.
So prepare yourselves to greet him
who will save, whate’er the cost.
