Call To Worship
(Includes the lighting of the Advent Wreath)
Leader: Already, the year is behind us and we are counting the days until Christmas -- the eldering for one set of reasons and the young for another. We've come here to enjoy the festivities of December and to tell again the stories that encourage us to be God-bearers in our world.
People: The scriptures say that God has made promises of safety and prosperity to people who are willing to be loyal bearers of goodness and grace, mercy and hospitality.
Leader: In every generation, leaders emerge who love the Holy One and promote righteousness and beauty.
People: When events of living seem overwhelming, we are glad for the reminder that God is near and will not desert us during political upheaval, natural disasters, and family disputes.
Leader: We are expecting God to come among us in new ways; we are expecting to birth holiness right here!
People: Ring the bells! Clap your hands! Our hearts rejoice.
Leader: Make a circle. Light a fire. Sing a song of love.
People: We know the stories of the past -- deserts, flowers, too.
Leader: Now for us this candle brings a vision of sprightly breeze ...
People: that God will move among us with strength and peace!
(Two purple candles on the Advent Wreath are lit.)
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Living God -- with gladness we see stars; we hear angels; we remember old stories. Here, together, we thank you for the images surrounding us, pointing to you. Thanks, too, for the quiet of this moment and the companionship among us gathered here. Amid the beauty, we give you our undivided attention. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Quiet the chatter in your minds.
Let the Spirit refresh you with awareness of how you might be whole and how you can be available with contagious joy for others.
Let's recite the printed confession and then listen in silence for the Divine Voice.
Community Confession (Unison)
Loving God -- Christmas comes but once a year; thank you for being active in our lives all year long!
Reveal the negative aspects of our behaviors and free us from their hold on us.
Let us feel your empowering love sending us with peace into the world. Amen.
Word Of Grace (Leader)
Like the wreath, God encircles us with divine grace; like the flame, God warms our hearts; like the candles, God lights our darkness. In a baby, we see hope of a future and our fears vanish in the newborn Christ. Hallelujah!
Congregational Choral Response
Canticle of Mary, Magnificat (v. 1, modified)
My soul gives glory to our God; my soul sings forth its praise;
God immerses us in loveliness in many marvelous ways.
Sermon Idea
The images in Malachi, a strong soap that washes clean and a fire that polishes silver, appeal to the senses of smell, sight, and touch. God's presence with us is like that -- appealing to all our senses! When our whole selves are saturated with the Holy, then we will be what God intends. In Philippians, the image that stands out is the connectedness we have with one another; the ribbons that circle us flow from Jesus and their goal is to honor God. The final section of Luke 1 is (father to John and Uncle to Jesus) Zechariah's ecstatic delight with the prospect of fresh, unmistakable activity of God on behalf of oppressed creatures.
The Luke story is told in the hymn "Song Of Zechariah." If there are male dancers in the congregation, this can be a powerful and masculine choreographed presentation.
The Luke story works well as a choral reading. Four readers, each with a microphone, can stand/sit in various sections of the gathering space.
Reader 1: After John is born to Elizabeth, father Zechariah is overcome with gratitude and feels the Holy Spirit ablaze within.
Reader 2: Praise God! The God who walked with our fathers and mothers!
Reader 3: God has come to the help of oppressed people and has set them free!
Reader 1: The Holy One has provided a mighty hero, a Savior.
Reader 2: Prophets of ancient times have told us again and again that God would not desert us -- that we would be delivered from enemies!
Reader 3: As we look back, we see how God has been with our ancestors, showing mercy and comfort.
Reader 2: God appeared to Abraham and Sarah and they heard the divine affirmation of progeny, property, and holy presence.
Reader 3: Without fear, people could honor God with righteous living every day!
Reader 1: Then, Zechariah has a blessing for his son:
Reader 4: You, John, my child, will be a spokesperson for the Most High God. You will show others how to experience forgiveness from sin, how individuals might experience the mercy and tenderness of God. Your humility will welcome God like a bright dawn with salvation to shine from heaven on all who live in dark shadows. You, my son, John, will prepare the way for paths of peace.
Reader 1: John grew up, maturing in body and spirit.
Reader 2: He lived in the desert until he was ready to be a public leader among the people of Israel.
Reader 3: While John and Elizabeth celebrated the birth of their child, John, later dubbed "The Baptist," Cousin Mary and Joseph were expecting their first child to be named "Jesus," later called "the Christ."
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We experience God among us as the creative Spirit stimulating our thoughts, working through our hands and our feet to make a bit of heaven on earth.
We believe God is among us -- vulnerable and strong, loving and sustaining each one who welcomes the Holy.
We know God is in this world; we dream of fresh political structures that are fair, respectful, and inclusive.
We trust that God is reconciling families and nations and resurrecting the God-image in all persons.
Through every part of our human journey, God is with us; we are not alone. Hallelujah!
Offertory Statement (Responsive)
Leader: We work to pay our mortgages, to buy things for our homes, to put nutritious food on our tables, and to entertain ourselves.
People: And then the world takes so much from us.
Leader: At the same time, there are men and women in our town who need basic supplies for their survival.
People: We will give our time, talents, and moneys to support this place and to provide for people in need.
Doxology
While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks (v. 6)
All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace;
Good will to all from highest heaven
Begin and never cease! Begin and never cease!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
For all we have, for all we are becoming, thank you, God. For money, for families, for this church home, we are grateful. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Various Readers)
Energy of the Universe -- thank you for setting us free from soul-threatening tyrannies. Continue to inspire us with words and actions of peace. Thank you for John the Baptist who calls us to open ourselves to your creating love. Thank you for Jesus the Christ who challenges us to imagine a godly way to be in the world as peace-makers, justice-workers, and mercy-carriers. Live in us as gratitude, passion, and joy.
Lover of the World -- can you see through the dark actions and thoughts of humankind? Do you weep at the terror and war that invades the psyche and destroys the body and mind? Do you grieve at the destruction of the earth's land, air, and water? Save this world from self-destruction. Raze human greed and sow seeds of collaboration on fertile hearts of politicians and war-lords; raise government and business responsibility from profit to meaningful work and healthcare for all children and adults. Guide us all to paths of honest communication, curious seeking, and satisfying relationships.
Maker and Shaker of our Humanity -- like good soap, bathe us in goodness. Like refiner's fire, polish our expectations. Like a physician, encourage us to be available to the wholesomeness in our environment. Like an artist, recolor our pains and griefs until light shines through.
Dreamer of a New Reign -- let your peace and your heaven come to earth. Set in motion human mercy and hospitality that reach into our own towns and around the world; set in motion economic possibilities for all peoples; set in motion a transparent honesty that erases corruption; set in motion a contentment so that we are not caught in voracious buying.
Thank you for Jesus who moved through birth, childhood to adulthood, and shared your wisdom and your grace with all the world. Refresh us with love to give away. Amen!
Benediction (Leader)
May the beauty of a sleeping baby fill you with wonder; the curiosity of a toddler dance in your toes; the anticipation of a lover carry you into tomorrow; the peace of Christ soothe your mind; the joy of Holy Spirit brighten your whole day and night! While we are absent from this place, know that you are cradled by the living God!
