THE WONDER OF WORDS: BOOK 2
ONE-HUNDRED MORE WORDS AND PHRASES SHAPING HOW CHRISTIANS THINK AND LIVE
Jesus once told a story about a woman who kept nagging a greedy and unjust judge until his resistance was worn down, and he finally gave her what she wanted. (Luke 18:1-8) In that parable, Jesus contrasted a mean judge to our lovingheavenly Father, who is anxious to give us his good gifts. In another instance, Jesus compared God's willingness to give, to the willingness of an earthly parent: "You know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him." (Matthew 7:11) If the secret of receiving God's good gifts is to ask for them, then we'd better learn just how Jesus wants us to ask! He has told us how to do it! This is what he said: "Everything you ask and pray for, believe that you have it already and it will be yours." (Mark 11:24, The Jerusalem Bible)
What did Jesus mean by the phrase, "Believe that you have it already"? He meant for you to use your God-given power of sanctified imagination! See, in your mind's eye, God is now giving you his good gifts. Unfortunately, many people, in prayer, do just the opposite of what Jesus recommended. They concentrate on the problem instead of visualizing the positive desired effects. Jesus calls us to practice the Prayer of Affirmation. In the Greek text of Jesus' words, in Mark 11:24, the verb "believe" is in the present tense, implying continuous action: "Keep on believing"! This is called "The Prayer of Affirmation" because an affirmation is a positive statement, an assertion of truth, a declaration made in trust that the good Lord is already giving us his good gifts. The word affirm comes from two Latin words, "ad" (to) and "firmare" (to strengthen). Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance. It is laying hold affirmatively on his willingness to give good gifts to his earthly children. Modern medicine, in its use of "guided imagery," is only now catching up to Jesus.
