Call To Worship
Leader: God has promised, "I will be your God." God has promised, "You will be my people."
People: These are the promises of God who sees us through all our journeys, who is present as Spirit deep within us, who will not desert us.
Leader: Come, let us worship God.
Collect
As we come to know you within our hearts, O God, we show your love in the way we act toward others. As we open our hearts to you and discover that you are with us, our whole way of being changes. We will be your people. Praise be to you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Many have given up the search for you, dear God, through empty, traditional ways because we are looking from the outside, from the external form, and on the surface. Teach us to be quiet and listen for you with our whole being. Teach us the new way of knowing you from within our hearts. Through Jesus. Amen.
24B Hymns
"God Reigns O'er All The Earth" or "This Is My Father's World" Tune: TERRA BEATA
"Glorious Is [Thy][Your] Name, O Jesus" Tune: GLORIOUS IS YOUR NAME
"There's A Wideness In God's Mercy" Tune: IN BABILONE
Fifth Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Hebrews 5:5-10
Theme: Reverent Submission
Call To Worship
One surprise of reverent submission to God lies in not losing one's identity but rather in finding one's true self. Come, follow the ways of God. Come, let us worship God.
Collect
Teach us your way, O God. Remind us that however confusing and disturbing life may become, you are on our side. We come to you with patience, determined to bear whatever suffering we must. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We would rather use a different word for submission, O God. We do not like ideas of surrender, yielding, or giving in. Submission reminds us of our loss. Help us see the gain of reverent submission which places us within the realm of your plans. The obedience of reverent submission speaks of a welcoming acceptance that unites us with you. For the sake of Jesus. Amen.
24B Hymns
"Beautiful [Jesus][Savior]" or "Fairest Lord Jesus" Tune: SCH...NSTER HERR JESU
"Be Still, My Soul" Tune: FINLANDIA
"Teach Me, My God And King" or "Teach Me, O Lord, Your Holy Way" or "Teach Me Thy Way, O Lord" Tune: ROCKINGHAM or MORNINGTON
Fifth Sunday In Lent
Gospel: John 12:20-33
Theme: Glory, Glory
Call To Worship
All earth all around us comes to life. All nature resounds. The season for last year's seed appears to have ended; yet its shell provides nourishment for the growth of the new plant. Last autumn's leaf fall breaks down and down into usable nutrients that give energy to this spring's leaf crop. The whole natural world prepares for life.
Collect
We get caught in particular births and deaths, O God, and forget the cyclical flow within a single moment -- holding at once a unity of all that is, has ever been, and will be. In the dying of your Son, Holy Parent, lay the seed of life eternal so that all might know you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We begin to see, O Sustainer, that Jesus' life and death transcend history. Let us see that the fruit of his life confirms truths measured beyond minutes and hours. Help us also to live not for ourselves alone but to nurture the vitality of those around us and offer sustenance for those yet to come. In the name of Christ. Amen.
24B Hymns
"My Song Is Love Unknown" Tune: RHOSYMEDRE
"[O][Our] God, Our Help In Ages Past" Tune: ST. ANNE
"[Mine][My] Eyes Have Seen The Glory" Tune: BATTLE HYMN
