Invitation to the Corporate Celebration
One pastor began this way:
We're getting closer. We keep hearing the announcement, usually somewhat ahead of schedule; for, by now, the mass media has announced Jesus' birth billions of times. However, in the midst of the Christmas confusion and busyness, there are two attitudes toward any form of faith - either, the duty of performance, or, the joy of being. Which do you experience today?
You may want to continue with this litany which emphasizes the joy of being:
Pastor:
God loves the world, even that part of the world we don't love.
Right side: Alleluia!
Left side: Hurray!
Pastor:
God calls us to celebrate the Good News of Jesus' birth; even when we don't feel like it!
Right side: Alleluia!
Left side: Hurray!
Pastor:
Glorious things God has done for us, to us, with us, even when we're not aware, even when we least expect, even when we rebel, even when we ignore God's call.
Right side: Alleluia!
Left side: Hurray!
Pastor:
Joy is ours, because we are Christ's.
All: (3 times) Alleluia!
(3 times) Hurray!
The Act of Recognizing our Humanness and the Act of Receiving New Life
Try this:
Begin by asking, "How many of our personal actions do we excuse or rationalize as 'sick' behavior, rather than as decisional behavior? For 'sick' behavior, we need take no responsibility; for decisional behavior, we are responsible."
Invite the people to consider how often they blame others for their problems, mistakes, errors, sins. Invite them to think silently about what their attitude does to their closest relationships, and how it affects their accountability to God.
After 3-5 minutes of silence, you may want to conclude with a prayer of forgiveness, and this litany:
Pastor:
Listen! Here is Good News! Jesus the Christ came into the world to liberate the alienated, rebellious, I-centered ones. In him, the Lord of Life, we are forgiven, reconciled, freed. Amen.
Ministers: I hear! We hear! This is Good News indeed! Jesus the Christ came into the world to liberate me, us. In him, I am, we are, forgiven, reconciled, freed!
Message with the Children of All Ages
Consider this:
For the courageous ones, with voice, you may want to sing, or have someone else sing if you don't have much of a voice, either "Tis the season to be jolly," or "Santa Claus is coming to town." Ask if the children have heard those songs lately. What happens when they do hear them? Probably they begin to salivate, get excited, and wonder what they will get for Christmas.
Compare their usual response to Christmas with Mary's first response to the announcement that she would bear the world's savior. She was "greatly troubled." She wondered what it was all about. And only later, even though she didn't fully understand, she agreed. "All right then, I am at the Lord's service. I want it to be just as you have said." (Luke 1:38, Cotton Patch Version)
Proclamation of the Good News
Consider this:
God comes to us in a variety of ways for a variety of reasons. In the beginning, we often respond, "I can't (followed by our favorite excuses)." God keeps coming until we either say "yes," or "no." If we say "no", God keeps coming, until we finally say "no" eternally. Compare our fears about saying "yes" with Mary's fear. Compare her "yes" finally with our need, in God's economy of time, to say "yes."
Stewardship Challenge
Try this:
The Stewardship of often saying "no" until we finally say "yes." We like to pray, "Thanks, God, for all that you do for me." We forget to pray, "God, how come I have so much when most of the world has so little?" Make certain that receiving God's call, though fearful, requires obedience, even as Mary finally obeyed.
Charge to the Congregation
Suggestion:
Because Christ lives, we also shall live, can live, do live for Christ's sake, for the world's sake, for our sake.
The issue for us, this week and always, how will we live in obedience to the God who calls us to be the body of Christ.
