Answer Me When I Call
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O LORD, make me lie down in safety.
-- Psalm 4:8
Theme: Confident plea for deliverance from enemies
Outline
1 -- Appeal to God.
2-3 -- Counsel to the rebels.
4-5 -- What to do when disturbed: quiet trust in the LORD.
6-8 -- Gladness and confidence in the LORD.
Notes
• Affirmation of Faith
• An evening prayer (companion to Psalm 3), an antidote to anxiety for the morrow, a reminder of our only real security in the recurring dangers of life.
• It seems to follow the situation of Psalm 3.
• "God of my right!" = my Defender, Vindicator, my Righteousness (v. 1).
• "The faithful" (chasid, derived from chesed, steadfast love), a term describing the recipient and sharer of the covenant love of God (v. 3).
For Reflection
• Verses 6-8 suggest gladness and peace can be ours even if our outward circumstances are disturbing. Do these gifts come from cultivating optimistic thinking or the knowledge of God? (See Philippians 4:4; 1 Timothy 1:12.)
Prayer
Praise be to you, Lord God, for showing yourself to David and to your beloved Son as one able and willing to sustain them in their distresses. Give to us that quiet trust, that we may both rest and rise in your service now and on our last day. Amen.
