Brad was a good student. He studied hard because he enjoyed learning, but when he was sick, he did not enjoy anything. "Brad, you will be better tomorrow," his mother assured him, smoothing his pillow. "I called Mrs. Adams and she understands." Brad tried to smile, but his stomachache would not let him. The next morning, however, Brad felt fine, just as his mother had said. But when Brad arrived in his school room, there was a substitute teacher. "Now what?" Brad thought. "This teacher will not know I was sick yesterday."
Ms. Jones said, "Boys and girls, we will go around the room to give everyone a chance to do a math problem based on what Mrs. Adams taught you yesterday, according to her note to me." Brad's stomachache began to hurt again. He listened to Adam and Alice and Jeff and Ginny and knew it was his turn next. "God, help me," he prayed silently. Ms. Jones called, "Philip." She had skipped Brad! After class Ms. Jones called to Brad, "Let me help. Ask me and I will do it." And she did. Brad's prayer was answered.

Prayer: Dear God, help us be brave when we are afraid and loving when it is difficult. We pray to you for the things you can do and we work at the things we can do. In Christ's name. Amen.
